Boris Shocks Westminster By Exiting Tory Leadership Race
The lying little coward. Make a mess, then run away.

Michael Gove To Stand In Conservative Party Leadership Election
We all agreed with Mr Gove when he said he was not capable of being a prime minister

UCLA Professor Accused Of Sexual Harassment Returns
How can he return? He was accused!
We all know that anyone accused must be guilty.
It is a basic principle of American mob justice.

Andrew Castle Slammed Over ‘Lecherous’ Comments About Marcus Willis’ Girlfriend
It is neither sexist nor lecherous to imply that someone looks nice.
The whiners should get their minds out of the gutter and get a life.

Mhairi Black Makes Impromptu Speech Pleading For State Pension Equality
There should be pension equality!  Males have been discriminated against in this regard for decades.  It is time this sexism stopped.     That is, Black is NOT pleading not for equality, but for continuing tinequality in favour of women, and Huffpo is deliberately conniving in her attempts to mislead the public.

Judge’s Sentence In Immigrant’s Sexual Assault Case Shows He Needs To Be Fired
Typical mob reaction: blame people who follow the laws as they are written, not the laws nor the legislators who wrote them.    They seem to want him fired because he did use his position on the bench to put his own views above the law in deciding these cases.

Conservative Christians Grapple With Whether 'Religious Freedom' Includes Muslims
I'd like to know what Wofford said about catholics murdering protestants in Northern Ireland?
Did he call for a ban on building catholic churches?

Justice Alito Warns Of ‘Ominous Sign’ For Religious Freedom At The Supreme Court
He is right, it is just not fair.
Religious freedom should mean that Jewish ambulance drivers are allowed to refuse to carry people who eat pork or cheeseburgers.
Muslim emergency room doctors should be able to refuse to treat people who have drunk alcohol.
Christian police should be able to refuse to attend any domestic dispute where one of the parties has committed adultery.

Deadly Suicide Bombings Hit Istanbul’s Ataturk Airport
Will this wake Turkey to the dangers of islamist factions? Will they return to secularism? Unlikely, as Erdogan sees the Islamist as the way to keep himself in power.
What is good for Turkey? He doesn't care. It is only what is good for Erdogan that matters.

Clinton claims House Benghazi report ‘found nothing,’
House Spent Millions Of Dollars On Benghazi Committee To Exonerate Clinton
Not guilty again? Well that is just not good enough.
Let's keep trying her until we find her guilty.
The only reason that she gets off is because of the stupid insistence on evidence.
If the congress had any backbone, they would follow their desire for mob justice and just lynch her.
That would certainly save a lot of our tax dollars that Republicans seem to spend like it was water.
Corbyn Plans ‘Mandatory Reselection Of MPs’ If He Wins Fresh Leadership Mandate
Just as Brexit won from a desire to say "up yours" to the elite, including mainstream policitians. Corbyn will win, especially given the number of conservatives that have registered as Labour party members. He will then use this as a mandate to punish sitting MPs (which it, indeed, will be).
The net result: a labour party that is even less electable than it is now, unless a lot of xenophobic MPs are selected.
Failing that, many will desert to UKIP and Labour could take over the role of the Liberals as the conscience of the nation - but only if they can get rid of their traditional politics of me-I-my-mine self-interest.

More Than £40B Added To UK's Biggest Companies In FTSE 100 Comeback

Oh Joy! As we only lost 120bn on Brexit, that means we're now only down 80bn. What a great result!

The RNC Plans To Turn Bernie Backers Against Hillary Clinton’s VP Pick
These folk view our leadership and government as just a game, where winning is more important than the American people. They know that this kind of cynical creation of divisiveness increases anomie and apathy and makes the United States a worse place to live. They just don't care.

David Cameron addresses Commons on Brexit: 'We are in no rush to trigger Article 50'
Of course there is no hurry, we can stay in the EU as long as we like. We just keep paying the net 8 billion a year, obeying all EU regulations, allowing free immigration of EU citizens and subordinating our courts to the EU ones until 2 years after we invoke the clause.
We could wait until just before the next election in 2020, if parliament wants. Then, after the current lot are voted out, it would be up to the next government to botch the negotiations.   That is what Cameron is doing, why not the rest of parliament?

Shields and Brooks on voter disenchantment across the globe
It seems to me that  the vote for Brexit was not just a vote against the EU, it was a vote against the modern world.  Similarly, a large portion of the vote for Trump is a vote against the modern world.
Sadly, for those voters, the modern world is not going away. With Brexit, most of the things the people voted against (immigration, the threat of terrorism, a weak economy, a jobless recovery, weak social mobility, inequality of wealth and power, and governments - at whatever level - interfering in their daily lives) will continue unchanged or will worsen. Ditto for Mr Trump.
Many of these votes come from people who feel desperate and do not know what else they can to do. They are willing to suffer pain and compromise on some principles for the hope of stopping these tides from their inevitable rise.   Thus some cosmopolitans were willing to close an eye to the xenophobia of Farage and his ilk, even though they were aware that EU migrants are a significant net benefit to our economy and culture and they personally oppose discrimination on the basis of ethnic origin.  Some economically literate were willing to see a currency and market fall: it was not that they did not believe the experts who predicted this, it was simply a price they were willing to pay.
Equally sadly, the things that many are voting for (freedom, independence, democracy, a greater voice in how society is organised) will not improve, whether under Brexit or Trump.
Many Brexit and Trump voters are just tired of being told what to do by uncaring incompetents while things, in their view, go downhill.  Many, whether knowingly or not, are rebelling against the elite, as described by Gaetano Mosca and Elmer Schattschneider.   It may seem ironic or paradoxical that these rebels follow a member of the elite (Boris Johnson or Donald Trump) but that is merely per force: they have little else to choose and they are not ready for revolution.

Second EU Referendum Petition Reaches 2.1 Million Signatures After Brexit Vote
I am opposed too Neverendums. Instead, let's revise the idea of the Hanseatic League, with London, Manchester, Liverpool, Leeds, Leicester and Newcastle uniting to do a Leave on the UK.

Nicola Sturgeon Says Scotland To Hold Talks 'Immediate' Talks With EU

We are tired of subsidizing them and can't be rid of these drains on the exchequer soon enough.

Supreme Court Deadlocks On Immigration, Leaving Deportation Relief Plan In Limbo
It is only illegal immigrants that are in limbo.
Limbo is a very nice place compared to what usually happens to people who break the law.
"one person, even a president, cannot unilaterally change the law,”
Although every American president before him has done precisely that on this very issue.

Nigel Farage: Young People Who Signed Up In 48 Hour Extension Have Won It For Remain
I hope this non-entity, famous only for being famous, will now recede into the twilight. Sadly, the media have too much fun quoting his chicken-little statements and his attacks on his betters, so I suspect we will have to endure his mug and his silly pronouncements until the media can find another subject that generates more heat than light.

EU Referendum Conspiracy Theory #UsePens Has Turned Into Full Blown Hysteria
"As we’re all aware the entire referendum campaign has been full to the brim with WTFs."

Well, the ineloquent yobos among us are so aware.
The rest of us eschew WTFs and similar smutty cuteness that replaces any actual thought

Let me see if I've got this right:
Deaths from heroin = 11,000,
Deaths from guns = 30,000.
Solution: ban heroin, promote guns.

British man, 20, accused of trying to kill Donald Trump
Another Radical British Extremist!
We need to stop all Britons coming into the United States until we can figure out what is going on.

Michael Gove Hints He May Quit Government If UK Votes To ‘Remain’ At EU Referendum
That would be a blessing - and a benefit I hadn't considered.

JK Rowling And Nadine Dorries  Bust-Up Over David Beckham’s Pro-EU Post
And Huffpo presents this as "news" because.....?
Why does this journal insist on lets-you-and-her-fight stories, rather than cover the issues?
Is it just laziness, or is there an agenda?

Senate Republicans Call For More Surveillance After Orlando Massacre
These blinking Republican liberals shouldn't be allowed to trash the 4th Amendment in this way.
Where is their respect for the Constitution?

Woman Defended By Passenger Against Man On Bus Who Demanded She ‘Speak English’
"We're in Wales and she is speaking Welsh." Nice one!
But speaking any language is not offensive to local cultural values, where as the horribly sexist Niqab is. Niqab wearers are either pig ignorant of local cultural values or being deliberately disrespectful of them.

Nigel Farage Told He ‘Dragged British Politics Into The Gutter’
No, it is the British media, including Huffpo, who have done that.
They will give no one any press time unless they attack someone or make xenophobic, hitlerian, or other outrageous chicken-little statements. Anyone who talks quietly and dispassionately about the issues simply gets no coverage.

Jeremy Corbyn Denies He’ll Be To Blame For Brexit
The lead-in Headline says "Blissfully Blameless."
It should read "Unusually Useless"

Nigel Farage No One Cared About His Anti-Immigration Poster Until Jo Cox Was Killed
He only says that because he is an insensitive piece of scum who is famous for being famous.
How much is he paying the media, Huffpo included, for all the unjustified coverage he is getting?

U.S. Likely Won’t Deliver On Promise To Resettle 10,000 Syrian Refugees
"These figures are a drop in the bucket compared to the influx of refugees and asylum seekers that Europe has experienced"
The US has taken in 750,000 refugees from Latin America each year for the last 10 years or more. That is 7.5 million over a decade. How many has Europe taken in that time?

Federal Judge Refuses To Block Mississippi Anti-LGBT Law
Radical Christianists get to keep their law until the case is actually heard, because none of the plaintiffs faced any immediate injury that would justify an injunction - so the reason was technical and had nothing to do with the issue.

Afghanistan: A crossroads for US-Arab relations
Crusade is a nicely loaded term but very unusual to see it applied to a war against the Soviet Union who had invaded and were occupying a Muslim nation.
I can see why animosity towards the US grew as US policy became more inconsistent and erratic, abandoning many of its old allies, but, given the way Russia treats its own Muslim minorities, I am surprised that animosity shifted away from them.
I can also see that some Muslim-nation leaders were (are) despised, but again find it difficult to associate US support of Muslim-nation leaders with the term "crusade."
I think the author is far too loose with this term - apparently apparently liking it's iconic emotional value but warping it to mean "any outside support for a side I don't agree with."

Russian Track And Field Athletes Barred From Competing In Rio Olympics

I did like Putin saying that Russia's (quote) "so-called clean athletes" should be allowed to participate.

Is the economic cost of Brexit too great?
Brexiteers are like kids demanding independence from their parents, but wanting to live in the garage rent-free and still have mum do the laundry. The difficulty the UK electorate is facing is that, for totally unrelated reasons, they do not trust ANY of the leaders on either side of the campaign. They say to themselves: "These people have always lied to us in the past, why should we believe them now." Like the US Presidential race, it is hard to decide when you think that both sides are liars.

Is white America blind on racism, or just playing dumb?
Not just white America, all of America is blind on this topic.
This column is quite racist in its own right.

UK Gun Laws ‘Saved Tube Knife Attack From Turning Into Orlando Style Massacre’
Just as these laws stopped Thomas Mair?

Thomas Mair Charged With Murder Of British Politician Jo Cox
We need to know how this man was radicalized and what we can do to stop other Britons from becoming radicalized.

Trump Calls For Surveillance Of Mosques
Okay, as long as we can have surveillance of Trump headquarters and branch offices.
I know which I think is the greater danger to the United States of America.

Islamic State Is Committing Genocide Against Yazidis
They have been doing this for some years now. Daesh are moharebeh: enemies of Allah.
However, like the Jews in Germany, everyone chooses not to know anything about it.

Corbyn: Stop Blaming Migrants & EU For Job Insecurity Caused By Labour And Tories
You can blame them all you like.
Bottom line: leaving the EU will NOT reduce net migration.

Birstall Shooting: Labour MP Jo Cox Shot And Stabbed
Not only shot (we should ban guns) but stabbed (we should ban knives). People can keep their guns in shooting clubs and their knives in cooking clubs, where they can use them as they were intended. There is no compelling reason to have a gun or a knife in the home.

The Fundamental Question About Trump: What’s Wrong With This Guy?
There is nothing wrong with Trump. He is just your average guy who inherited a fortune and rolled it along by cheating others while remaining pretty well ignorant of world affairs. (That last part is much like most Americans.)
There is also nothing wrong with him deciding that he wants to seek the nomination for President of the United States of America despite having neither the knowledge nor the competence to do the job and despite him being a lying, blowhard, xenophobic bankrupt.
The only thing wrong is that Republican primary voters agreed with him, mostly because of the xenophobia - they are willing to forgive all the other drawbacks as long as he stays bigoted

    Wednesday 15 June 2016

Nigel Farage and Bob Geldof clash in rival Thames boat
More let's-you-and-him-fight coverage because the issues are too hard.
Bottom line: Labour, Liberals and the Selfish National Party are mere sidelines: this referendum is - pure and simple - about whether the UK wants the right-wing of the Tory party (Brexit) or the centre-right of the Tory party (Remain).  And that is just how the UK press in presenting it.
Boris Johnson and Alex Salmond Square Up
Note that the headline (and most of the coverage) is about the personalities and let's-you-and-him-fight, NOT about the issues. (Covering the actual issues is just too hard for our journalists.)
"It was billed like a boxing bout." By whom was it billed this way?

“If some of those in that club that night had guns strapped to their waist..."
Oh, he is so right: people should carry guns in a sex club that serves alcohol.
    What could possibly go wrong?
Jeremy Corbyn Says He Would Oppose Post-Brexit ‘Austerity Budget
Backfires how? Everyone knew that Corbyn had difficulty dealing with reality. His solution: if the economy tanks, just borrow more money to support our current lifestyle. Let the kids and the grandies pay for it - we can get away with that because they are too young to vote.

President Obama Slams 'Yapping' Over 'Radical Islam' And Terrorism
You mean, if we could just have gotten everyone to use the words "Radical Catholicism" and "Radical Protestantism", and banned any Catholics or Protestants from entering the UK, the troubles in Northern Ireland could have been solved a decade earlier and saved the lives of a thousand women and children? Darn, why didn't we think of that?

Osborne predicts £30bn hole in public finance if UK votes to leave EU
Why do you think Boris and the right wing of the Tory party are for Brexit?
With a 30 billion hole, even a 10 billion hole, they can justify more cuts to benefits and government services.
Something they have always wanted to do.
Brexit is just a another Tory way to shrink the government.

Orlando Shooter’s Wife Reportedly Knew Of His Plans For Attack
Again, the Trumpler Youth method: report on your neighbours, parents and spouses or go to jail.
I thought that a wife could not be compelled to testify against a husband - or has that gone by the board in our new police state?

LGBT Americans target of violent hate crimes more than any other group
Often the violence comes from one of their own LBGT community members, as in this case.
Self-hatred turned outwards and rationalised by a "cause" hot in the news and found on the internet.
In Orlando mass shooting, a search for motive
When it turns out that not only is his connection to ISIS only in his dreams but, far from being a homophobe he was a member of the LBGT community and a regular at the club, I think: "All those lovely knee-jerk reactions gone to waste!"

A Mass Shooter 'Pledges Allegiance' To ISIS. What Does This Mean?
What this means is a licence, a rationalization of the opportunity to kill a bunch of people with impunity and a god on your side. ISIS would have 10-time the recruits to fight for them if they did not insist that they all be Muslims.

Trump Calls To Ban Immigration From Countries With 'Proven History Of Terrorism'
    Good idea Donnie
Sweden, Ireland, the UK, Germany, Belgium, France, Spain and all of the old Yugoslavia - and that is just the European Countries with a Proven History of Terrorism. Then there is Russia, all of the Middle east, all of central Asia, the entire India sub-continent, India, China and Japan.
We should also restrict the movement of people from places in the USA with a proven history of terrorism, such as Californians, Floridians, Bostonians, Arizionans, Oklahomans and members of US Army.

    The Labour supporters backing Brexit
The Leavers are like kids who demand independence from their parent then ask to live in the garage rent free. They remind me of Alex Salmond, promising to pay 300% more than they take back from the EU with their fantasies about money pouring in from some undefined new spirit in the future

    Monday 13 June 2016

    Gun Laws
It is generally agreed that gun laws are shaped by the NRA and the gun manufacturers'lobbyists. I wonder why the other side does not set up similar lobbies, using similar tactics:
    1) Publish each legislator’s record
    2) Make large campaign contributions to those who favour reasonable regulation and against those who oppose them
Some argue it is because the NRA and gun manufacturers have more financial resources. That just says gun manufacturers and gun owners are willing to put their time and money where their mouth is. Those supporting sensible regulation seem less willing to do the same; they seem to think it will happen just because they want it to or because they write a few letters to their representatives. That, sadly, is not how the US legislature works.
It seems that profit, post-purchase rationalization and macho culture are better motivators than the lives of Americans and their children.

Trump: Americans Who Don’t Report Suspicious Neighbors Should Be ‘Brought Justice
The Trumpler youth way: inform on your neighbours and your parents or go to jail. We could set up a branch in every police station. We would call it the Section To Assemble Information Suspecting Islam (STASI).
Let's also bring to justice anyone who does't inform on businesses that rip off their investors.
Donnie, I don't think I want you in my country.
I just don't have much time for a lying, xenophobic, blowhard bankrupt.

How many minutes of silence have been observed by Parliament for the victims of Daesh and Assad in Syria, or for the victims of the Taliban in Afghanistan and Pakistan? What? Those victims weren't affluent westerners? Oh. Sorry. Never mind.

Donald Trump Calls On Obama To Resign Over Orlando Shooting
We should demand to know if he supports the right of radical Islamic citizens to bear arms.
Trump should withdraw from the election if he is not willing to use the words "Radical NRA Extremism" and "Radical Homophobic Extremism."

Trevor Phillips On Race, What Muslims Think And Getting Support From The Far Right
He has a point. There are three questions:
    1) What can non-Muslim Britain do to integrate Muslims into our community and our values?
    2) What can Muslims do to integrate into Britain and its values?
    3) Why aren't they doing it?

The EU Referendum Campaign’s 26 Craziest Comments
And of course, these kinds of comments are what the media cover in their headlines almost exclusively because trying to inform their audience about the issues involved is just too hard for modern journalists to bother with: Lets-you-and-him fight stories are so much easier to write.

Appeals court rules no constitutional right to carry concealed guns
Good for the court.  The constitution says I have a right to bear arms.  It does not say I have a right to sneakily hide my bearing of arms from my fellow citizens of the United States of America.

Bernie Sanders Gives A Speech Divorced From Reality

The majority of voters know that Clinton and Trump are lying whenever their lips move.

New rendition of classic opera ‘Porgy and Bess’ offers a ‘greater truth’
Good for them. Classic stories need re-telling in each generation to point up the current zeitgeist. It may seem that this would be easier than creating one's own work, but that is not necessarily the case. Re-telling a classic means agonising over throwing the baby out with the bathwater or damaging the soul of the piece by tacking on modern lessons.
For example, the Bourne Identity remake was technically superior to the original in every way, but making Bourne a real assassin tears the moral heart out of the story. Perhaps intentional: saying that being moral does not matter to us as much today as it once did, but it means the re-make is actually a different story, merely plagiarising, and capitalising on the success of, the earlier version.
I hope that is not the case with this production and wish them every success.

National Cathedral Will Remove Confederate Flags From Stained Glass Windows
    Another cover-up.
Trying to pretend that this flag never existed is wrong-headed: understandable, but wrong-headed.
Bowdlerising history does not build an enlightened public.
This is the equivalent of Victorians vandalising Greek and Renaissance art with fig-leaves.
Unless we wish to pretend that Lee and Jackson fought under some other flag, we should leave them as they are.

'Not even death can stop 200,000 migrants wanting to escape'
Of course the threat of death can't stop them:
    1) they think others will die but they will not
    2) they have a simple plea: "We have stuffed out country (or allowed it to be stuffed) and have given up on trying to fix it - so we want to come to your country now.   Indeed, because our own country is so stuffed, we think we are entitled to come to your country."
Appeals court rules no constitutional right to carry concealed guns
Good for the court. The constitution says I have a right to bear arms. It does not say I have a right to bear arms sneakily hidden from my fellow citizens of the United States of America

ITV EU Debate: ‘Remain’ Campaign Repeatedly Gangs Up On Boris Johnson
The EU referendum is clearly not about the EU at all, but a referendum about the personalities in the Leave and Remain campaigns. This is fortunate, because neither the electorate nor the mainstream media journalists want to do the work to understand the issues. Both, however, understand - indeed cut their eye-teeth on - let's-you-and-him-fight.

W.H.O. Advises Delaying Pregnancy in Areas With Zika Transmission

Trump Says Comments About Judge 'Have Been Misconstrued'His comments about this judge were xenophobic and that was not misconstrued.
However, his remarks were misconstrued as racist. They were NOT racist.
Mexican is NOT a race, it is a nationality.
Mexicans come in many races, including Caucasian, Afro-Caribbean, Asian, Amerindian and Mestizo.

As transgender teens struggle, here’s how one Kentucky school copes
What about the trans-racials, who identify with a different race than the one they were born with? And the trans-agers, who identify with a different age than the years they have been on the planet. Shouldn't trans-age 16-year-olds be allowed to compete in the under-14 squad, shouldn't trans-racials be eligible for minority-only scholarships? "It all comes down to being respected as a person and accepted."
There is an incentive in being seen as special: being treated differently from everyone else: those who say they are "trans" whatever expect to be able to do things that are forbidden to people who do not say they are trans.

More Young People Link Tony Blair To Crimes Against Humanity Than Pol Pot
Not surprising, since 72% have never heard of Pol Pot.
Surprising that Stalin beat Blair out as I didn't think young people knew that much history, especially since 70% had never heard of Chairman Mao
"A third of young people believe Tony Blair is linked to crimes against humanity...."
Just goes to show that if you tell a lie about Blair that is big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. I think Joseph Goebbels said that.

Trump Says Muslim Judges Also Might Not Be Fair To Him
Yeah! Let's get rid of all mick-spick-wop-kike-towelhead judges.
Only people who look like me should judge me.
    What?
That means only black judges can judge black folk, only chinese judges can judge chinese folk, only cherokee judges can judge cherokee folk, only muslim judges can judge muslim folk?
Hmmmm, I may need to re-think this.

EU referendum: 'scaremongering' Cameron attacked by Michael Gove
    Dear Guardian
Why are you reporting this referendum debate almost entirely in terms of individuals or "sides" attacking each other?
Is reporting the actual issues just to much work?
I know that let's-you-and-him-fight stories are easier to write, but do you feel NO duty to inform your readers?
U.S. Women's Soccer Team Cannot Go On Strike, Court RulesThe soccer women deserve the money, since they have been drawing more audience than the men.
Tennis women should also be paid according the audience they draw.
Paying one gender the same money as the other for drawing smaller audiences is just sexist discrimination

Michael Gove Accused Of ‘Donald Trump Politics’ In Sky News EU Referendum Debate"Michael Gove was accused" - i.e. accused by a journalist.
What business does a journalist have accusing anyone of anything? I thought news sources accused each other and journalists reported it. Now it seems we have cut out the middle man. Why not just cut out all interviewees and have two journalists role-play various positions with each other?
"Islam hit back..." so "hitting" interviewees is now part of the job. I know people who are like that in conversation: they don't really listen or respond to what you say, they just wait for a pause to score points. Seems that style is now considered journalism.

Elon Musk Says Our Existence Could Be Someone Else’s Video Game
Very nice argument and irrefutable: not necessarily correct, but not refutable. In this case, scientific discoveries are actually inventions, not discoveries at all and replicable experiments are acts of persuasive creativity.
