What absolute nonsense! A contractor has an obligation to pay tax on income just as any other citizen. The fact that the BBC is not acting as an unpaid government collection agency has NO impact on the obligations of the contractors. To suggest that BBC is hereby assisting tax avoidance is like saying you are assisting retailers in tax evasion if you do not report every purchase you make to the government.
Ain't government wonderful: first talk you into taking over a bank to rescue the economy. Then say: AHA, now you own it, we can sue you for damages from their actions before you agreed to our request that you buy them.
Why aren't these policies racist? Tricky question. The answer is: because it was thought to help rectify the effects of racist discrimination before the applicants ever get to college age.
The real question is: how many generations after the 1964 Civil Rights Act such preferential treatment should be carried on. It has been two generations since that legislation began to even things out. Is that enough, or do we need another generation? There are plenty of opinions on this, though not much agreement
The issue is similar in requiring approval for changes to voter laws in some districts. Some of the draconian so-called anti-fraud laws currently in vogue indicate there may still be a need, though the court may find that there are other (and perhaps better) ways to achieve the end of ensuring that every citizen who wants to vote can do so. Especially since some of the worst throw-the-baby-out-with-the-bath-water voter-fraud laws have been promulgated in districts that are not affected by the law that the court will consider.
Well, of course he will not get an apology. With 20-20 hindsight, we now know that NO pockets were picked at the stadium on the day (any so-called victim who says he lost his wallet is part of the cover-up) - and that no police were EVER assaulted at that ground (the banning of Liverpool fans from international competition was part of the cover-up too).
You've heard of "Disgusted, Tunbridge Wells"? Well, I live in Holland Park and I've Had It. Up to here! An old curmudgeon, I rant and rave about things I read, see or hear in the News. Frequently sarcastic, irreverent and libertarian; often wrong - but never uncertain.
