“Well, of course. Thanks to the degradation of our world image over the last 10 years and the solid lock that the Israel lobby has on the US electoral system, Israel knows it can b*tch-slap the US whenever it feels like it.”Mubarak Must Go

Yes, one thing we know is that the thugs who attacked must be plain-clothes secret police or outside agitators. They could not possible be ordinary Eqyptians who support the government and resent their streets being taken over.
Western pundits like Mr Diamond have assured us that, since the elections were unfair and unfree, that only about 1/2 percent of Egyptians support the government and want their streets and their normal daily lives back.”

“Well, if we do, we should be sure to send less than 50% of the troop strength that any sensible military person says is needed, disband the local army, decimate the local police, try to elect some expatriate political hacks to run things and ignore advice from anyone who knows the culture.
After all, this worked so well for us in Iraq.”

Well we actively opposed the brutal repressive rulers in Iran and North Korea.
Didn't help the people there much.
You overestimate the effect that America has on the world.

That didn't work too well the last time we tried it, either.”

“"Fear has kept the West, and the U.S. especially, on the side of brutal reactionary rule"
In some countries this is true, in other countries the west (and the especially the US) has opposed brutal reactionary rule (Iran, N. Korea).  Neither strategy seems to be very effective.
Those who say the US should choose sides are arguing in favour of a policy of regime change. That didn't work so well in Iraq
