- on BBC and unions turn to ACAS in pension row 32 minutes agoSo, basically, the unions wish to protect their pensioned members from any fall in living standard that the rest of us may need to face. That is, they want to stop work unless they are treated better than other Britons.
- on Monday Tube strike goes ahead as talks fail 43 minutes agoTime to increase automation on the tubes and reduce the number of staff to the bare minimum - so they will be easier to replace with scabs when they put their own featherbedding ahead of their duty to the public.
on Blair vs Hitchens: The dress rehearsal 1 hour ago"the idea of the sacred" is precisely where religious evil comes from: holding that a given belief or opinion is "sacred" is the source of bigotry, war and other inter-religious conflict."....But that does not alter the fact that people have a need for reconciliation and forgiveness..." True, but there are many ways to find these things outside of the sacred and outside of religion.
- on Johann Hari: There won't be a bailout for the earth 1 hour agoWhere are Malthus and Ehrlich when we need them?
- on Rail investment worth 1 hour agoRail companies are just like us: they want lower fares, more services and more money in their own pockets. Like us, they think the best way to get this is for the government to give them more of some other people's money.
- on Why the Republicans' hammer got nailed 1 hour agoSince the intent was to violate Texas law, the verdict seems just.
The joke is that the Republican National Committee - who were equally complicit in this deliberate subversion of the law - was not put on trial.
(PS: I'd be willing to bet that the Democrats took actions that were effectively the same.)
- Does the study show a massive drop in passive smoking deaths over the past 10 years? If so, why is this not reported? That is, are we reading science reporting or propaganda?
Why does this story keep the the identity of the authors secret and hide where it was published? Does Mr Laurence not wish us to examine the methodology?
PS: Obesity kills 10 times the 5.1 million per year ascribed to smoking - and obesity is avoidable
