- on Rail passengers urged to protest over fares 1 hour agoYeah, we should not have to pay more. If the congestion charge is keeping our gas guzzlers out of London, the rest of you working slobs should subsidise our commute. It would be outrageous to suggest that we pay the cost of our trips.
- Obamacare is not universal health care. The provision most opposed by republicans is a federal requirement that all citizens must buy private health insurance. It is a constitutionally interesting question whether the federal government has the power to do this, but if all people are not required to join the pool, health insurance mandates (can't drop people who get sick, must cover people with pre-existing conditions) will cause insurance rates to rise dramatically.
There are two groups who tend to take a free ride on healthcare in America: 1) young people who don't buy insurance until later in life when they are more likely to need it and 2) the poor who get their treatment , free of charge, in hospital emergency rooms.
(This is exactly the same treatment given to those with health insurance or those who pay out of pocket - including anyone who has assets and so can be made to pay in law).
Many Tea Party folk want these free rides to continue...that is, they want these groups to be paid for by wealthier people, via a hidden tax that is buried in the cost of healthcare for everyone.
- "Some ... are concerned that nudges will be used at the expense of new legislation on tobacco advertising, tax on junk food and other issues"
Yeah, quango's and lobby organizations can't show how well they are doing unless they can point to regulation. It doesn't matter that nudging works better than regulation, it's all about the scorecard.
- on 'Humiliation' of being overweight 23 hours agoWhat did you expect? The fashion industry is run by people who don't like women much.
- Support the Jedi religion - they have yet to start a war, burn or blow up anyone. (PS: Buddhists aren't too bad either.)
